Drill Attachment on a Mid-cab Diesel

The Drill Attachment is a powerful locomotive upgrade introduced in the Urban Update. When equipped onto a diesel engine, it transforms the locomotive into a tunnel-boring machine capable of carving out underground rail corridors while automatically laying track and lighting the tunnel as it advances. It includes chipped and damaged variants, similar to an anvil, that appear as the drill wears down.

Functionality

The Drill Attachment works with the Front-cab Diesel and Mid-cab Diesel engines. When active, the engine mines blocks in front of it, places track as it moves forward, fills gaps in tunnel walls, and automatically deploys Construction Scaffold and Construction Lamps. Up to five stacks of track can be loaded into the engine for drilling.

With the experimental chunk loading introduced in the Urban Update, players can even leave the train drilling far into the distance, allowing it to carve extremely long tunnels while the player is elsewhere.

While drilling, the engine’s maximum speed is significantly reduced. A durability gauge on the right side of the cab displays the drill’s condition. As durability decreases, the drill becomes slower and eventually shifts to chipped and damaged variants.

The attachment may also be placed as a decorative block. When powered with redstone, it performs a spinning animation.

Interaction

Players attach the Drill Attachment by using it on a compatible diesel engine.

The drill must have track loaded into its inventory, which is done by right-clicking the engine to open its storage. If no track is available, the engine will not move and will play an error sound.

While drilling, steering is handled with the left and right movement keys, and all mining, placement, and lighting occur automatically.

Obtaining

Crafting

Place iron bars in the top left and top right with the piston in the top middle. Put blocks of iron on the left and right of the diamond in the middle row. Then place the hopper in the bottom middle, leaving the bottom left and bottom right empty. Crafts one Drill Attachment.
